Biological response of spontaneously hypertensive rats to the streptozotocin administration BABT

The sensitivity of adult spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) to the diabetogenic effect of streptozotocin (STZ) was studied. The animals were subdivided into three groups: control (citrate buffer), streptozotocin 40 mg/kg or 50 mg/kg, and general biologic parameters were analyzed, in addition to systolic blood pressure, blood glucose and insulin levels determinations. Both doses were able to induce hyperglycemia above 300 mg/dl; however, 50 mg/kg provoked a more pronounced physiological alterations in body weight, diuresis, water and food intake. The autonomic nervous system plays an important role in physiological and pathological conditions, and has been extensively evaluated by parametric and non-parametric spectral analysis. To compare the results obtained with fast Fourier transform (FFT) and the autoregressive (AR) method, we performed a comprehensive comparative study using data from humans and rats during pharmacological blockade (in rats), a postural test (in humans), and in the hypertensive state (in both humans and rats). Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors reduce blood pressure and attenuate cardiac and vascular remodeling in hypertension. However, the kinetics of remodeling after discontinuation of the long-term use of these drugs are unknown. Our objective was to investigate the temporal changes occurring in blood pressure and vascular structure of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). Captopril treatment was started in the pre-hypertensive state. The low incidence of cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension, in premenopausal women has led to the conclusion that ovarian hormones may have a protective effect on the cardiovascular system. We evaluated the effects of ovariectomy and/or estradiol on sympathovagal balance and heart rate variability (HRV) in female spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) with tachycardia and compared them to Wistar rats (12 weeks old; N = 8-12). Ovariectomy (OVX) and/or estradiol (10 µg/kg) did not affect basal arterial pressure in either rat strain, but estradiol increased basal heart rate (HR) in OVX SHR (454 ± 18 vs 377 ± 9 bpm). Cardiopulmonary reflexes are activated via changes in cardiac filling pressure (volume-sensitive reflex) and chemical stimulation (chemosensitive reflex). The sensitivity of the cardiopulmonary reflexes to these stimuli is impaired in the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) and other models of hypertension and is thought to be associated with cardiac hypertrophy. The present study investigated whether the sensitivity of the cardiopulmonary reflexes in SHR is restored when cardiac hypertrophy and hypertension are reduced by enalapril treatment.
